Kada Area

The Kada area is home to Tomogashima Islands, Awashima-jinja Shrine, and Kada Beach.

From Hiina-no-Yu, walk ~3 minutes to Kada Port, and take a ferry for ~20 minutes. Note: The ferry is not in service on Tuesdays. The timetable is irregular, and we ask that you contact the company on the day of your boarding.

The Tomogashima Islands are four islands in the Kitan Strait—Jinoshima Island, Torajima Island, Kamijima Island, and Okinoshima Island. The area rose to fame due to its resemblance to the setting of a famous Studio Ghibli film. There are hiking trails and campsites on the islands.

Awashima-jinja Shrine

The shrine holds Harikuyou (a Shinto ritual for needles) on February 8, Hinanagashi (a Shinto ritual for hina dolls) on March 3, and the Amazake Festival (festival of sweet fermented rice sake) on October 3.
Numerous dolls devoted to the gods can be found in this shrine—as many as twenty thousand, it's said—and many tourists visit the place.

The Kada Line of the Nankai Electric Railway runs from Kinokawa Station to Kada Station.
The interior of the Medetai Train is decorated with tai—a tasty fish also known as red sea bream. This fish is associated with the word medetai (celebration in Japanese), and is regarded in Japan as a good luck charm. Riding this train is sure to bring a smile to your face. There are two types of Medetai Train—Sachi and Kai. "Sachi" means "happiness" and "Kai" refers to kaiun—the beginning of good luck.

Wakayama Castle is the symbol of Kishu.
Its tenshu—main keep—commands a panoramic view of the city. The inner moats and stone walls around the main castle remain as they were in ancient times. Visitors may feel the 400 years of history of the castle, where the Kishu Tokugawa family once lived and reigned as feudal lords. There is a zoo on the grounds of the Wakayama Castle, and visitors can meet peacocks, penguins, bears, and many other animals free of charge. This is the fourth oldest zoo in Japan, and the only zoo in Japan located on the grounds of a castle.

About 1,400 land animals and ocean creatures dwell in their natural surroundings, living freely in Adventure World. Visitors can get on special observation cars or the train-shaped "Kenya Train" car to watch animals roaming freely in Safari World, and meet and play with small animals at Enjoy World. Performances by sea creatures are held at Marine World, and there are roller coasters and a Ferris wheel at Play Zone. This theme park promises a pleasurable experience for both children and adults.

Mt. Koya is a part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, and a designated World Heritage site. The mountain stands about 800 meters above sea level and is surrounded by mountains as tall as 1,000 meters above sea level. More than 100 temples are located on or around Mt. Koya. Visitors can feel the divine compassion of Buddha on this sacred mountain, as though the land itself is welcoming them. The famed historical monk Kobo Daishi Kukai practiced here beginning in 819.

Yosuien Garden once belonged to the feudal lord. The garden is about 23,140 m2 in total area, about 11,570 m2 of which is occupied by ponds. The garden was originally built as the residence of Tokugawa Harutomi, the tenth head of the Kishu Tokugawa family.

Toshogu Shrine was built in 1621, and is widely known as an Important Cultural Property that exemplifies the architecture of the early Edo period. Visitors can learn about its sculptures and murals from the staff.

This temple was the setting of the tragic love story Anchin Kiyohime. The story of Anchin Kiyohime was written in the Hokkegenki in 1044, and is a popular subject for noh, kabuki, and ningyo joruri (Japanese puppetry) theater, in which the story is referred to as "Dojoji-Mono."

Kokawadera Temple is located between Wakayama City and Mt. Koya, along the Kinokawa River, which runs through northern Wakayama Prefecture. The extensive temple grounds are about 115,702 m2 and its 200-meter stone pathway is a must-see.

Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle was built by Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1585. Although the castle as it currently stands is not the original structure, the castle was beautifully and sturdily reconstructed. Inside the castle are exhibits in which visitors can learn about its history.
Its tenshu (main keep) commands a scenic view of Osaka, and the castle lit up at night is a must-see.
